Once upon a time Winchester was the capital of Britain (9th – 11th century). In 1079 the construction of the Cathedral was started but it took about 500 years to end up as it is today. It is a very magical building full of atmosphere and stories, it wouldn’t be out of place in an episode of Game of Thrones.<\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"<\/p>\n

The building is full of patterns everywhere either carved into stone or wood or painted on the floor. Its a rich tapestry of craftsmanship, textures and materials. When you look closely at details its easy to see how the years have changed the surfaces, I like hunting for the signs of wear and tear the marks that life and people have left behind.<\/p>\n

One of the really special things about Winchester Cathedral is that there is an Antony Gormley sculpture in the crypt. It is called ‘Sound II’ and is made from lead moulded from a cast of his own body. The added bonus is that during rainy months the crypt floods creating some beautiful reflections. There is such an air of tranquility down there I could have sat for hours.<\/p>\n

And finally for any literary people out there it is where Jane Austen is buried.<\/p>\n
