Another day another temple

Another day another temple

After a brief stay in Bangkok (I’m heading back there later) I went up north to Chiang Mai. One of the highlights here apart from the elephants because they just trump everything, no pun intended, is the Doi Suthep Temple. I don’t have much time for this post so for now I won’t tell you much about it other than it is a total feast for the eyes! Definitely a huge amount of gold everywhere. It was particularly magical because there was a massive monsoon down pour (another bucket list ticked) during the visit which made everything sparkle that bit more both due to the wet and the contrast of the grey/blue stormy skies agains the yellow gold.

There were offerings of lotus flowers and candles lit outside and to be honest I am surprised they didn’t go out.

As always I like to look out for the signs of age and evidence of patinas of wear, the wabi sari of the place. This had plenty for me to wonder over.

It also had a long frieze of paintings telling the story of the Buddhas journey through life.

My favourite Buddha here was a green one which sparkled in the rain.

And finally to get to the temple there are over two hundred stairs to climb, but its definitely worth the effort.
