Sailing the Andaman Sea

Sailing the Andaman Sea

The other part of my adventure in Thailand involved a catamaran and the Andaman Sea. Starting from Phuket I spent a week with a fantastic crew and some great companions leisurely exploring this stunningly beautiful area of South East Asia. The map below gives you an idea of the area we were covering.

We started of at the Yacht Haven Marina on the north east coast of Phuket (about fifteen minutes drive from the airport) which incidentally is quite a nice place to hang out for a while. It is very picturesque, serves reasonable priced good food and drink in comfortable surroundings, has free wifi and the nicest air conditioned toilets I visited throughout my entire trip in Asia which also have a shower if you should need one.

We set off with beautiful blue sky’s to sail towards the northern Islands to find a place to stay the night. Not long after we left shore the clouds rolled in and the rain came! If I am honest I had not considered the fact that it might rain but had focused on this being an opportunity to top up my tan. The winds howled and the rain came down only topped by the addition of thunder and lightening…welcome to the Andaman Sea!

Fortunately I am a big fan of a thunder storm so I loved it and accidentally managed to capture this piece of evidence to prove I am not exaggerating the experience. By the time we reached our spot for the night the weather had calmed down considerably and we had a settled first night on board with the most beautiful scenery all around us. Having been to Halong Bay in Vietnam a few weeks earlier this seascape was remarkably similar to that consisting of large jungle topped limestone formations rising out of the ocean which become like dormant monsters as the sun goes down incredibly atmospheric.
